Summary: Since witnessing her parents' murders at the age of eleven, Phoenix's only purpose in life has been to uphold her mother's dying words - to be strong and survive. But surviving outside of The Walls - outside of The Sanctuary - is more like a drawn-out death sentence. A cruel and ruthless city, Tartarus is run by the Tribes whose motto is simple, "Join or die."
Refusing to join and determined to live, Phoenix fights to survive in this savage world. But who can she trust, when no one can be trusted? Not even herself...
The first of a trilogy, New World Rising is an epic tale of survival, instinct, trauma, and the extraordinary power of human connection.

My opinion: This book came with my Make it out alive Owlcrate Box last year an I read it months ago. It is one of the last books I need to review for 2017. So here we go.
I can tell you that I was doubtfully at the beginning. I read so many dystopian novels before. BUT New World stands on its own! I was captivated from the first page and finished it after two days.
Phoenix lives in a world where everything we know now has been destroyed. Only two areas are left, where people have terms to survive. One is Tartarus, a rough city ruled by 5 tribes, each one more wicked than the other. The other area is called The Sanctuary. Phoenix was born there but left for Tartarus with her parents years ago.
After she has witnessed the murder of her parents by people of the most brutal tribe 6 years ago, she has been on her own. Now she is 16, stays in the shadows of the city and trusts no one.
But after seeing the tribe that murdered her parents huntig a little girl she steps out of the shadows.
That decision changes her life completely. She is thrown in a third hidden society that wants to fight against the tribes and against The Sanctuary if necessary. There she gets to know Mouse, the little girl she saved from the tribe and she meets Triven, a boy barely older than her but who seems to be able to give her some steadiness. It is a new feeling for Phoenix...someone who cares for her. But in return she starts to care for other people in her life as well again. But she knows that this is dangerous. To care for someone means to be more vulnerable.
And that isn't good considering the fact that Phoenix, Triven and Mouse are part of the group that shall sneak in The Sanctuary to find out whats going on there....
A great start of a series! I can't wait to read book two. The world building is great because there are a lot of details, especially about the different tribes and Tartarus, the city where Phoenix tried to survive in for so many years. Also the romance doesn't whitewash the main plot and the caracters are very believable. My favorite one is Mouse. She seems to be the moral rock in the Story while the whole world turns more and more brutal.
And holy moly....the cliffhanger an the end wasn't very kind! I expected some cliffhanger but....oh man. As I said before: I can't wait to read the next book!
Cover and title: New World is a simple and fitting title for a dystopian novel. Rising is the Special name for the first book. The other two are titled with "Ashes" and "Inferno". Sounds exciting. The cover was choosen well too. I think the city at the ground is Tartarus and the fog is a Symbol for the old world, that has been destroyed and maybe also for the new one that has to be build. Great!
Would you read this book again? Yesss.
