My opinion: I can tell I was so excited to read this book from my january Owlcrate box. The theme was Classic Remix and once I saw the book I was sooo happy because I am really fond of The Phantom Of The Opera - both, the film and the book. But maybe my expectations were a little bit too high.

As in the book Of Fire And Stars I read a few weeks ago, the story starts with a young lady - Rune -  who has a special gift. Or curse, however you might call it. Once she hears music she must sing, otherwise she becomes ill. But when she sings, she feels ill, too. Her mother doesn't know how to help her daughter and so she sends her off to a music school in France. RoseBood. I'm sorry, but that's a stupid name for a school, isn't it?

When Rune arrives at RoseBlood she soon sees a young boy who apparently isn't one of the students. Day by day she gets more nervous because she read that RoseBlood is built on the former place of the opera house of the real Phantom Of The Opera. Is it possible that the Phantom still lives? Maybe the Phantom want to lure her? Her school uniforms disappear and one evening, there is an invitation on her desk in the room. An invitation for an infamous rave club in Paris. People say that everyone who visits this club has lost memory of what has happened there...

But when she finally met Thorn, the young guy she suspected to be the Phantom earlier, everything changes. Rune and Thorn have a special connection at once but there is a problem. Erik, Thorns father, is the real Phantom and he needs Rune for a maniacal plan.

I like the idea of the story and the paranormal twist but there are also so many things I couldn't quite get along with. For example: Rune and Thorn often meet each other at the graveyard. Why for heavens sake is there a graveyard on the school area. There is no reason but making the story a little bit more creepy. Then Thorn wears a mask, like his father. But of course he has no scars or incinerations. He says it's better for him so everybody thinks he is the Phantom but he stays hidden like his father so it makes no sense for me. Then there are the new friends Rune get to know at RoseBlood. I like them very much, they are funny and understandable, BUT one of the names is Sunflower Summers. Even if it would be a stage name it would be horrible. She is called Sunny by her friends but sorry, that doesn't change anything. I know it's a dram but I can't get over it :D. And it's the same thing with the Phantom Of The Opera owning a rave club in Paris. A rave club? No! That simply doesn't fit for me. I know it is a modern retelling but it should match with the original figures.

Nevertheless the writing was beautiful. A.G. Howard has a talent for catching this especial atmosphere around the Phantom story.


He'd walked as a ghost in the gloomy bowels of this opera house for so Long, darkness had become his brother, which was fitting, since his father was the night, and sunlight their long forgotten friend.


She also did a lot of research for the book. I can't tell the ins and outs because I don't want to spoil anybody but she fugured out a lot about the role models for the original Phantom Of The Opera story and I really appreciate that. I also like Rune and Thorn as single characters. When they are together, it is a little bit too soppy for me. Even there, saying that they are meant for each other is not enough for me.

The title only fits because it's the name of Runes music school and as I said before, I don't know why a school needs such a terrible name. It's the same Thing with the cover. Why picture a girl with the mask of the Phantom. Maybe it should be Rune, but she never wears a mask in the book.

So you see, I am not quite happy with this book and I'm sooo sad about it. I wanted to like it :(

Did anybody recognize such problems after reading a book?

Would you read this book again? No, I don't think so.

Kirschblüten - Doris Dörrie (Filmbuch)

Klappentext: Ein Buch zum Film, ein Buch über den Film, ein Buch für nach dem Film: Rudi und Trudi sind seit dreissig Jahren ein Paar. Als Trudi plötzlich stirbt, fliegt Rudi zu Sohn Karl nach Japan, um das zu sehen, was Trudi wichtig war, und was sie zusammen nicht mehr erleben konnten: ihren Sohn in Japan, die legendäre japanische Kirschblüte, den Fujiyama und auch den Butho-Tanz, der früher einmal Trudis Leidenschaft gewesen war.

Meine Meinung: Ein Flohmarktfund und gleichzeitig ein Fehlkauf. Ich habe nämlich völlig übersehen, dass es ein Filmbuch ist. Steht zwar deutlich drauf, aber ich war einfach zu schnell. Eigentlich wollte ich nämlich ein normales Buch. Aber mein Gott...für einen Euro macht man nicht so viel falsch.

Mir gefällt allerdings leider auch die Aufteilung des Buches nicht. Im ersten Teil hat man die Geschichte in Bildern aus dem Film, im zweiten Teil dann das Drehbuch. Mir hätte es viel besser gefallen, wenn man die Bilder an den passenden Stellen im Drehbuch eingebaut hätte. Denn seit Harry Potter und das verwunschene Kind weiß ich, dass ich gar nicht so ungern Drehbücher lese.

Die Bilder sind nämlich an sich sehr gut ausgewählt und sprechen immerhin auch sehr für sich, sodass man nicht unbedingt eine Erklärung braucht.

Und auch das Drehbuch gefällt mir sehr gut. Es gibt viele sehr tiefgründige und ehrliche Dialoge.

Die Frage, was bleibt, wenn der Partner stirbt, ist allgegenwärtig und wird sehr bedrückend gestellt. Woher soll man nach so langer gemeinsamer Zeit wieder einen Sinn finden? Auch die große Kluft zwischen den Kindern und den Eltern wird hier sehr gut deutlich. Die Kinder finden ihren Vater mittlerweile kauzig und können nicht mehr richtig was mit ihm anfangen. Sie fühlen sich überfordert mit ihm.

Es ist toll wie Rudi sich schließlich aufrafft und nach Japan fliegt und gleichzeitig bricht es einem das Herz, wenn man sieht, wie verloren er sich dort oft fühlt.

Als er dann Yu kennen lernt, hat er endlich eine Freundin, die ihn versteht und die ihm hilft, in der fremden Stadt zurecht zu kommen. Trotz des großen Altersunterschied, der verschiedenen Kulturen und der Sprachbarriere verstehen die beiden sich sehr gut. Yu hilft ihm schließlich, das Land so kennen zu lernen, wie Rudis verstorbene Frau es geliebt hat.

Auch wenn ich jetzt schon weiß, dass der Film mich sicherlich zum Weinen bringen wird, so möchte ich ihn doch unbedingt sehen. Ich finde die Geschichte wunderbar und traurig zugleich.

Wer also auf gute Dialoge steht und gerne passende Bilder dazu sieht, ist hier sicher gut bedient.

Würdest du dieses Buch erneut lesen? Nein. Ich habe es verschenkt und schaue mir jetzt lieber den Film an. Es geht halt doch nichts über ein "normales" Buch.

Of Fire And Stars - Audrey Coulthurst

Summary:

My opinion: This is the book from my december 2016 Owlcrate. It belongs to the box with the theme "Epic". It was a fast read for me but I'm not a fan of this story. After all this book has the problem that often comes with YA novels. There is a young lady who has a special gift which she can't control and she falls in love with someone who is hard to reach. And then suddenly, when it's necessary, she learns to use the gift without any tutorial. You know what I mean? I miss the world building. The reader is thrown in the situation without any knowledge about politics, culture or the magic system. It is okay to start a story like this but then you have to give explanations little by little.
Overall the story stays way to surficial for me. Altough I like Denna and even more Mare. I like her strong character and her will to prove herself. But that's not enough.
Too many things happen without a real reason (For example: Why does Denna have to learn riding so fast? I can#T see any reason why she cannot do that after the coronation!) and as a dot on the I it was very easy to identify the traitor long before he got revealed. It would have been great to get to know something about the other countries like Zumorda. The basic concept was really great.

But there was something I noticed while reading and what I really adore about: The fact that Denna and Mare fall in love with each other is only a problem because Denna is betrothed to Thandi, not because they are two girls. This world seems to accept homosexual relationships and there is no reason to discuss it. I like that! More authors should write such storys. Even disregarding those facts, the romance was the best part of the book. I love the slow development between Denna and Mare. From antipathy to friendship and finally love. Not this "love at first sight" thing, you know?

All in all I can say that it was really okay to read this book, but I miss too much. The world "epic" is definitely too big for this book.

The cover is gorgeous. The leaves in the back, the little stars and the two girls that hold their hands. It matches with the story very well and so does the title. You will understand it, when you read the book. :)

Would you read this book again? No, rather not.

Die Flammen der Dämmerung - Peter V. Brett

Meine Meinung: Und schon habe ich auch Band 3 des Dämonenzyklus von Peter V. Brett durchgelesen. Die Reihe ist einfach zu genial und so habe auch den dicksten der drei bisherigen Teile flott inhaliert. Ich bin jedes Mal wieder fasziniert von dem Talent des Autors. Er schafft es, dass die Geschichte trotz der vielen Personen und der verschiedenen Sichtweisen, aus denen die Geschichte erzählt wird (Leesha, Arlen, Rojer, Jardir, Inevera, etc), übersichtlich bleibt. Die unterschiedlichen Sichten sorgen nur für mehr Spannung und vor allem für mehr Tiefgang. Man erhält als Leser einfach einen besseren Rundumblick für die Handlung und kann sich sehr gut in die verschiedenen Charaktere einfinden. Es ist toll, wie Brett es schafft, dass man für alle Personen ein gewisses Verständnis aufbringen kann. Sicherlich für die einen mehr und die anderen weniger. Aber er schafft es einfach sehr gut, die unterschiedlichen Kulturen und Wertevorstellungen zu beschreiben, sodass man das Handeln alle nachvollziehen kann. Fügt sich wirklich auch gut in die aktuelle Situation in Europa ein, wie ich finde. Aber ich schweife ab.

Auch hier ist wieder eine Person zu erkennen, auf der das Hauptaugenmerk des Buches liegt. Im ersten Band war es Arlen, im zweiten Jardir und in diesem Band geht es um Inevera. Ihre Kindheit, ihre Ausbildungszeit und ihr Aufstieg zur Dama'ting. Auch hier versteht man als Leser immer besser, weshalb sie so geworden ist, wie sie ist. Sie ist eine Meisterin im Ränkeschmieden und ist stets undurchschaubar. Ich finde es immer wieder spannend zu sehen, wie sie mit Leesha aneinander gerät. Die beiden sind aus so unterschiedlichen Kulturen, sind sich aber in ihren Fähigkeiten, ihrer Intelligenz und ihrem Temperament absolut ebenwürdig.


Gleichzeitig wird die Gesamthandlung immer weiter aufgebaut und zugespitzt. Jardir zieht mit seinen Krasianern in Richtung des Tals der Holzfäller und will auf dem Weg dorthin Land einnehmen. Er sieht sich als Erlöser und will die Menschheit von den Dämonen befreien und bereitet sich auf den Krieg vor. Genau so will er aber auch den ominösen Tätowierten Mann loswerden, den ebenfalls viele für den Erlöser halten.
Ein Zusammentreffen steht kurz bevor und Jardir wird eine Überraschung erleben. (Ich will nicht zu viel spoilern).
Währenddessen lernt Arlen immer mehr über das Wesen der Dämonen, wird stärker und stärker und sieht den Dämonenkrieg kurz bevorstehen. Er weiß, dass Jardir kommt, aber eigentlich weiß er auch, dass die Menschheit den Krieg nur zusammen gewinnen kann.


Das Cover gefällt mir super. Passt zu den ersten beiden Bänden und man erkennt Jardir im Hintergrund und Arlen vorne. Ebenso fügt der Titel sich gut in die Reihe ein. Man könnte die Flammen als Metapher für die Krasianer - das Wüstenvolk - verstehen, die in die grünen Länder vorrücken. Und die Dämmerung als Vorbote für etwas Großes, das bevorsteht.


Ich bin soooo gespannt auf Band 4. Der ist ja schon lange erschienen, aber ich habe ihn noch nicht gekauft. Das muss ich nun unbedingt ganz schnell nachholen. Ihr solltet das auch tun, falls ihr die Reihe noch nicht kennt. :) Aber ich wiederhole mich.

Owlcrate Box Juli 2017 - Wanderlust

Gestern klingelte es und zur Überraschung kam meine neue Owlcrate schon an. Das geht echt immer so fix!

Nach dem Schottland Urlaub ist das ja genau mein Thema. Mich hat die Reiselust noch viel mehr gepackt als vorher und mal abgesehen davon, dass ich natürlich auch gern so schnell wie möglich zurück nach Schottland möchte, liebäugle ich ganz stark mit dem Baltikum momentan. Riga, Tallin. Und natürlich auch raus aufs Land, in die Moore, ans Meer. Das soll dort ja alles wirklich toll sein. Aber mal sehen, wie und wann das klappt. War jemand von euch schon mal in Estland oder Lettland?

Nehme Tipps schon jetzt gerne entgegen.

Aber jetzt erst mal zur Box. Ich war sehr gespannt, was ich alles zu dem Thema dort rausfischen würde.

Dieser schicke Taschenspiegel im Samtbeutel von Miss Phi lugte oben heraus. Den finde ich schon mal super praktisch. Hatte früher immer einen dabei, aber den hab ich irgendwann verloren und ich will schon seit Jahren einen neuen kaufen. Hat sich hiermit erledigt. Seitdem ist er immer in meiner Tasche. Ihr seht hier nur die Rückseite des Spiegels (denn wie ein Spiegel aussieht, wisst ihr ja sicher von alleine #witzig). Darauf steht "As Travers". Ich hab erst mal doof geguckt, als ich das gelesen habe. Sollte das Englisch sein? Sagte mir jedenfalls gar nichts. Gut, dass es Google gibt. Der Begriff stammt aus dem Buch A Darker Shade Of Magic von V.E. Schwab und heißt so viel wie travel. Wie in vielen anderen Büchern gibt es da wohl eine eigene Sprache (wie Elbisch in Herr der Ringe oder so). Aaaah das erklärt alles und macht ja zum Thema auch richtig Sinn. :) Das Buch will ich übrigens auch schon ewig lesen. Ach ja..... :D

Dann habe ich dieses hübsche kleine Notizbüchlein von Ooly entdeckt. Ein sehr cooles Motiv. Wird definitiv benutzt, um meine geliebten Zitate darin zu sammeln. Also auch ein ständiger Begleiter.

Und hier haben wir ein Teil, das ich gerne schon vor dem Schottland-Urlaub gehabt hätte. Da ich vorher ja noch nie Gepäck am Flughafen aufgegeben habe, hatte mein Koffer auch keine besondere Kennzeichnung. Ich hab vor Schottland also kurzfristig noch zwei gehäkelte Bänder an die Griffe von unseren Koffern gebunden. Mit diesem echt niedlichen Kofferanhänger von Mudpuppy wäre das definitiv nicht nötig gewesen. Aber beim nächsten Urlaub kommt er dann zum Einsatz.

Und das hier ist mein allerliebstes Lieblingsteil aus dieser Box. Ein Herr der Ringe Turnbeutel. Mit der Ringinschrift und einem Zitat aus den Büchern. Ist er nicht schön? Seit ich ihn habe ist er mein ständiger Begleiter. Es passt so viel rein, ich hab die Hände frei. Merke immer wieder, dass ich mit allen Arten von Rucksäcken einfach mehr anfangen kann, als mit Handtaschen! Der Beutel ist übrigens von Owlcrate selbst designt. Großartig.

Dann gab es außerdem eine Funko Figur, die ich auch mal wieder selbst behalte. Einen Newt Scamander Schlüsselanhänger, der seinen Platz bereits eingenommen hat, wie ihr sehen könnt. Macht sich doch gut neben dem Minion und Tarzan, oder?

Dann gab es die Monatskarte und den Button. Außerdem seht ihr einen Kunstdruck von Shailey Ann Design mit dem Spruch I go to seek a great perhaps. Schöner Spruch zu dem Thema Wanderlust, oder? Kommt also mit Vergnügen an die Wand. hehe. In ihrem Shop gibt es übrigens wirklich richtig viele coole Prints. Ich glaube, da werde ich mal eine Bestellung aufgeben. Alleine die ganzen Harry Potter und Game of Thrones Prints sind zum niederknien.

Das Buch für diesen Monat ist The Gentleman's Guide To Vice and Virtue von Mackenzie Lee. Dazu gab es einen Brief vom Autor und eine Karte passend zum Buch. Das Cover ist wie die letzten Male auch schon ein besonderes Cover nur für Owlcrate Abonnenten. Und ich finde die Idee immer noch soooo großartig.

Klingt nach einer lustigen Roadtrip-Story. Ich bin gespannt. Momentan bin ich übrigens wieder voll dabei, meine Owlcrate Bücher zu lesen und endlich mal wieder aufzuholen. Bin immerhin schon beim Januar-Buch Roseblood und das bekomme ich nächstes Wochenende auch schon durch. Also ich hoffe mal, die Rezensionen zu den vergangenen Büchern lassen nun nicht mehr so lange auf sich warten.

Ein komplettes Bild der Box habe ich mal wieder vergessen. Das lag daran, dass ich mich so gefreut habe und zum Beispiel den Newt direkt an meinen Schlüsselbund gemacht habe. Und den Spiegel in die Tasche gesteckt habe....und dann waren die Sachen alle verstreut und ich habs verpennt. Nächstes Mal denke ich wieder dran ;).

Something wicked this way comes. Okaaay. Das klingt ganz anders als Wanderlust. Eher düster und gruselig und spannend. Ich habe gehört, dass in der Box Socken dabei sein sollen. Hihi, das find ich voll cool. Socken braucht man doch immer und wenn sie von Owlcrate kommen, dann sind es garantiert keine langweiligen, einfarbigen Socken :D. Man darf gespannt sein.
